After getting yourself some weapons following the initial Locust outbreak in Gears of War: E-Day, you'll want to make sure you've always got the best loadout possible for any situation. While switching the weapons you have equipped can help, sometimes just attaching weapon mods can make enough of a difference to the effectiveness of a weapon in different combat situations. The problem is, you'll have noticed that you only have one weapon mod slot available on your weapons at the start and the rest are locked. Here's how to unlock more weapon mod slots in Gears of War: E-Day.
To unlock more weapon mod slots, you need to complete secondary objectives and track down hard cases dotted throughout the world.
Secondary objectives are essentially side missions you can find in the open-area chapters in Acts 2, 3, and 4. These typically task you with holding down a location from a locust horde while an NPC or object finishes doing something or manages to escape. They typically take around 5-10 minutes to complete. When you discover a secondary objective, it'll be marked on your map with a gold icon.
However, finding a secondary objective requires you to pass in close proximity to its location and for Marcus or one of Bravo Squad to make a mention of the people in need. In Act 4, you'll be informed over comms about some secondary objectives you can complete, but as their name suggests, these are optional, so they can be missed.
Hard Cases are yellow containers that are scattered throughout the world. They are most commonly found in the open-area chapters in Acts 2, 3, and 4 but can also be found throughout the more linear chapters in the game, too. When you're close to a Hard Case, a message will appear on the left-hand side of the screen informing you that one is nearby. You can then press LB to show your Tac-Com, which will mark the location of the Hard Case if it's still in close proximity to you.
It's worth noting that both secondary objectives and Hard Cases also unlock mods for your weapons, armor, and tactical gear. This means that you may unlock a lot of mods for a weapon but still only have one mod slot for it unlocked.
At the time of writing, it's unclear if each secondary objective and Hard Case rewards a specific mod or mod slot, or if it's random. As soon as we've confirmed this, we'll update this post and let you know.
