Star Wars Zero Company Review: Tactical Blaster Action

Everybody knows that politicians start wars, then hand them over to generals. From there, you have layers of middle management that are getting orders from too far up to question, but also far enough from the field to not know soldiers by name. For most people on the field, the only authority they know well is their squad or team leader, the final layer of the onion of military authority.

If the decisions taken at the thousand levels above set the stage and influence the odds, the team lead's calls are ultimately what decide who gets to live and die. There is nowhere below to take the blame (apart from the mighty tactics deity that is RNGesus), so you, or in this case renegade Republic operative Hawks, are the final authority.

I won't waste time describing what Star Wars: Zero Company is conceptually because the phrase 'Star Wars XCOM' does the heavy lifting. You know the drill: tactical missions, personnel management, some superficial base-building, and the ever-present risk of being reminded why 95% is not 100%. At least Zero Company's characters are also vocally frustrated when this happens.

Let me start with a loving complaint to get it out of the way. Like most Star Wars spin-off media after the release of Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: Zero Company follows a fairly canned format. Here is a group of vaguely rebellious people on the side of the good guys, fighting against the evil brought along by a small but dangerous group of scheming fanatics on the side of the Big Bad Faction of this saga.

The '3D Clone Wars' special has the obvious drawback of being repetitive, but it also allows Bit Reactor and Respawn to break from the script. One of the biggest issues plaguing the Disney era of Star Wars is that it is bogged down by far too much canon material that covers just about every existing faction and character under the sun.

The phrase 'Star Wars XCOM' does the heavy lifting.
