Take-Two has signed a new deal with Xbox. Great! But what does it actually mean, and is it even a newsworthy development at all? That's been the big debate on social media since the news first dropped last night.
The deal was seemingly first shared by TipRanks yesterday, highlighting that Take-Two and Xbox have signed a long-term publishing agreement that allows Take-Two (the publisher behind GTA 6, NBA 2K27 and many other games) to develop, publish, manufacture, market, distribute and sell XBOX-compatible products across all XBOX devices.
Here's a look at the official summary for this partnership:
"On September 28, 2026, Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (the “Company”) and Microsoft Corporation (“Microsoft”) entered into a new long-term XBOX Publisher License Agreement (together with all exhibits, addendums and amendments thereto, the “Agreement”), with an effective date of September 17, 2026. The Agreement grants the Company the right to develop, publish, have manufactured, market, advertise, distribute and sell XBOX compatible products for all XBOX devices. The Agreement supersedes and replaces all of the Company’s existing XBOX publisher license agreements with Microsoft."
"Microsoft will pay the Company the applicable wholesale price and/or agreed revenue share for any of the Company’s digitally delivered products and content sold by Microsoft. Microsoft has the right to review, evaluate, and approve each game concept and the final version of the game, including the game’s packaging and marketing materials featuring Microsoft’s marks. Additionally, Microsoft charges the Company fees and royalties under the Agreement for each physical media product manufactured on behalf of the Company. The Agreement may be terminated by either party in the event of a material breach or insolvency. Upon expiration or termination of the Agreement, the Company has certain rights to sell off existing inventories."
Of course, Xbox and Take-Two have been working like this for many years, so a lot of people have highlighted that it just seems to be a simple renewal between the two brands, rather than anything particularly notable.
The Verge editor Tom Warren argues that it's not just a "standard" thing though - he believes the new agreement is meant to cover the Xbox Project Helix era as the previous agreement was specific to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
At the end of the day, we were never expecting Take-Two to get the hump about publishing their games on Xbox devices in the future, but it's good to know that the deal has definitely been signed and seemingly covers many years to come.
