It now marks 30 years since Valve first formed. Depending on your view of the company, it might be surprising to hear that it's older than you expected because you hopped on Steam with your first gaming PC in 2011. You might have had tabs on it since its first release. Or, you've just never looked into it, and you're surprised it has such a rich history somehow. Considering how Valve tends to be the enigma amongst gaming companies these days, I can see how certain details and impacts may have slipped a few people's notice.
Regardless of what your history of Valve is, I speak for everyone when I say that it might be the most impactful company in video game history. If it isn't, then it's certainly up there with the likes of Nintendo. Valve may have made some missteps along the way, what with being unable to count to three and the prices of its own hardware being widely debated and panned, but that doesn't change that it's shaped PC gaming and customer service values single-handedly.
On this special occasion, why don't we step back in time and take a look at all the things we wouldn't have if it wasn't for Valve? After all, there's a lot to be grateful for, even if we didn't realize it at first.
When you think of Valve, you likely think of summer sales and refund windows. You don't think of eSports. Yet, that's one of the bigger, silent driving forces for Valve as a company. Dota 2 started in 2013, being a bit late to the game (pardon the pun) compared to Riot Games' League of Legends. As a result, Dota 2 is still in League's shadow in terms of popularity and relevance, but it's still going strong.
In fact, The International Championships for Dota 2 just wrapped up recently. Team Spirit, made up of mostly returning champions, took home the title and a large crowdfunded prize of $1.4 million US dollars.
Looking at how Dota 2 has been a prominent staple of eSports, but not exactly one of Valve's household name releases, sticks out to me. It feels like it does a great job at representing Valve's mark in the industry as a whole. Always silently here, going about its business. It'll release games and hardware when it's ready and no sooner. We're all just fine with that as long as Steam keeps remaining a bastion of online shopfront hospitality and keeps burning through our wallets with summer sales.
I really couldn't get through this list without mentioning Team Fortress 2. Though, I suppose I could say that for everything on this list, one way or another. When I said Dota 2 isn't exactly a household name, Team Fortress 2 highlights exactly what I mean. It doesn't matter if you've never played Team Fortress 2. You know exactly who Heavy, Soldier, Scout, Spy, and the entire list of classes are just by scrolling through the internet and watching a bit of YouTube.
