Elden Ring and Dark Souls director responds to rumor he’s obsessed with feet

Iconic game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has responded to online speculation that he has a “thing” for feet, saying he’s not sure where it comes from.

The president of FromSoftware is behind some of the most beloved games of all time, including the Dark Souls and Elden Ring series, which are known for some of the most challenging bosses ever put to disc.

However, Miyazaki also has another reputation. Fans of his games have long joked that he has a foot obsession, given how often female characters are depicted not wearing any footwear, whether they’re NPCs or epic bosses.

While promoting his next project, The Duskbloods on Switch 2, Miyazaki actually brought up this perception of him while discussing how often hands appear in his work.

“It’s not necessarily something I’m consistently aware of – maybe it’s something subconscious coming through,” he told The Guardian. “Take a look online and there’s a rumour that I have a bit of a thing for feet, but I’m not honestly sure where this comes from.”

While he didn’t give an outright reason for the constant use of barefoot characters in FromSoftware games, he suggested it’s probably more symbolic.

“I feel like I’m trying to depict some side of human nature or the human existence that is difficult to describe,” he added.

This meme has been circulating on the internet for many years, with examples stretching as far back as the Maiden in Black from 2009’s Demon’s Souls.
