We have spent the last decade watching the dreaded “video game adaptation curse” slowly fade away before our eyes. I mean, huge global franchises such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog delivered fun, wildly successful blockbusters that proved Hollywood could actually get things right when respecting the source material.
But for the longest time, Resident Evil fans couldn't celebrate quite like the rest of the gaming community. While Mario was jumping through vibrant pipe worlds and Sonic was speeding across the big screen, Capcom’s premier survival horror universe remained stubbornly trapped in the cinematic trenches.
And as a lifelong fan who has held this franchise incredibly close to my heart since I was a little kid, I can tell you that we have been desperately waiting for a live-action adaptation that didn't feel like a Paul W. S. Anderson vehicle built solely to showcase Milla Jovovich doing wire-fu flips and talking to weird AI entities (with all due respect to Alice and that era, of course). We literally endured years of loose interpretations, bizarre character adaptations, and films that prioritized action sequences over the quiet, claustrophobic dread that actually defines the games.
I am genuinely thrilled to report that the long, painful wait is finally over, and the salvation of live-action Resident Evil arrived through an editorial philosophy almost nobody quite expected.
Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil film is undoubtedly going to divide a specific subset of the fanbase, but that is precisely why it is so brilliant. A lot of skeptics initially assumed this new attempt would fail simply because it isn't a beat-for-beat adaptation of the classic games. People kept asking: Where’s Leon? When is Wesker going to show up? Why aren't we watching a live-action recreation of the Raccoon City incident?
But the truth no Resident Evil fan really wants to really admit is that there isn't much actual magic in watching a film RE-tell a story we’ve already played through a dozen times in our living rooms. So, instead of recycling iconic legacy characters or trying to clumsily cram the entirety of the Spencer Mansion into a packed two-hour runtime, Cregger did something far bolder, far more artistic, and far more respectful of the medium: he set out to recreate the exact feeling of playing a Resident Evil game. And, man, this is good. Way too good.
