Escape From Tarkov Developer Opens Publishing Arm for Hardcore Games

The developer behind popular extraction shooter Escape From Tarkov is expanding its operations and becoming a game publisher.

Battlestate Games head Nikita Buyanov shared on X that the studio was venturing into uncharted territory and opening a publishing arm to help bring “hardcore” indie games to the wider market. He said that the team at Battlestate would “help bring your detailed, uncompromising, hardcore and immersive ideas to life” in order to ensure the survival of punishing and realistic titles that have swept the market in recent years.

Buyanov said the studio was accepting pitches for all types of games, regardless of the genre, setting, or whether it is a single or multiplayer experience. He listed some examples, such as simulators, immersive sims, military titles or even intellectual games driven by complex internal systems.

The Battlestate head added that they particularly encourage games that any other publisher might call “too ambitious, too niche or too risky”, giving would-be developers a near-limitless scope for creation. With the help of Battlestate’s community of millions of players and studio resources, Buyanov hopes to launch the next big thing in gaming.

Best known for its Escape From Tarkov tactical shooter, Battlestate is no stranger to the extreme in its titles and, in fact, set the genre's high bar for destroying players' confidence. The gameplay is very high-stakes—players lose pretty much everything if they die in an online raid, meaning it's back to square one. The in-game experience also lacks mini-maps, HUD markers or even crosshairs, bringing an intense sense of realism to players.

Usually simple systems like player health are also massively overhauled, with complex ballistics and damage systems adding another layer of difficulty. When injured, damage is limb-specific and complex (ranging from light bleeding to serious fractures) and players must find and use specialized healing items like splints, tourniquets and surgical kits to treat their wounds.

Of course, difficult games are nothing new—just look at the popularity of the soulslike genre, inspired by the classic Dark Souls franchise from FromSoftware. What is unique is how Escape From Tarkov's approach totally differs from traditional FPS games which usually prioritize accessibility. Instead, Battlestate's flagship game puts a heavy focus on tension, mechanical depth and severe punishment for in-game mistakes.

This trend of realism has begun to spread across the industry, with more and more players opting to jump into gritty and life-like experiences—primarily in the FPS genre. It’s not all about difficulty, but about bringing visuals, sound design and situations that emulate real-life, as opposed to fantastical or whimsical otherworlds.
