Wardogs on Steam is already a huge success, attracting hundreds of thousands of players and becoming one of the platform's biggest new FPS releases almost immediately after launch. Steam users can currently jump into Wardogs through Early Access, where as many as 100 players can compete across large-scale, destructible battlefields.
Developed by BULKHEAD, Wardogs entered Steam Early Access on September 10 and is published by Team17. The tactical multiplayer FPS splits as many as 100 players between three teams competing over randomized Control Zones, with the first team to reach 100 points winning the match. Its large-scale warfare combines infantry combat with vehicles, construction, destruction, and an economy that rewards players for contributing in different ways, giving FPS players an alternative to established multiplayer giants such as Battlefield and Call of Duty.
The early response to Wardogs has been enormous, with the official Twitter account stating that 1.25 million copies have already been sold. Steam charts currently show that Wardogs reached an all-time peak of 340,171 concurrent players on September 11, barely a day after entering Early Access, while more than 308,000 players were still in-game when the figures were checked. The shooter has also climbed to number 1 among Steam's top sellers and number 7 in daily active users, while attracting more than 165,000 followers and 29,000 reviews. Its launch has also generated substantial interest outside the game, with Twitch viewership peaking at more than 348,000 viewers. Taken together, the numbers suggest Wardogs is one of the biggest new multiplayer launches on Steam in 2026.
Part of Wardogs' appeal may be the freedom it offers compared to many other multiplayer FPS games. Every player starts with $10,000 and buys weapons, equipment, and vehicles each life, while earned cash carries over between matches. Capturing objectives, reviving teammates, transporting allies, and other team-oriented actions can all generate money, allowing players to contribute without simply chasing kills every game. That cash can then fund anything from better personal equipment to armored vehicles, while construction systems let squads fortify strategic locations and destruction lets them tear down those defenses and surrounding buildings.

However, the massive audience that Wardogs' formula has attracted has also put considerable pressure on the game's online infrastructure. Players have encountered lengthy login queues, difficulty joining servers, and unexpected mid-match disconnects during the opening hours, prompting BULKHEAD to release a launch-day stability hotfix. After installing the update, players were temporarily returned to the login queue, and the developer then allowed users back into the game in controlled batches while monitoring server stability. The problems made for a rough start in places, but launch-day server issues have become a familiar problem for ambitious Steam Early Access games that suddenly attract far more players than expected.
Wardogs is still only at the beginning of its planned development, with plenty more still to come. BULKHEAD expects Early Access to last roughly one to two years, with additional maps, weapons, vehicles, objective variations, deeper progression systems, and a larger seasonal metagame planned before the full release. Fighter jets are also among the future vehicle additions, while the team will continue refining performance, balance, and stability based on player feedback. Console players will have to wait considerably longer, with BULKHEAD confirming that PlayStation and Xbox versions are planned for 2028. Whether its enormous audience remains once the launch rush settles remains to be seen, but crossing 340,000 simultaneous players before version 1.0 gives Wardogs one of the strongest Steam FPS debuts of 2026.
