This article contains spoilers for Lanterns Episode 6.
Lanterns Episode 5 felt like a finale-sized event, even though the season still had three episodes to go, so fans wondered how Episode 6 would top it. Lanterns answered by turning Easter eggs and references to DC lore up to 11, with references to "the Bat guy in Gotham," nods to the Phantom Zone and The Suicide Squad's Starro, and a Superman crossover. The trailers promised Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner would show up in Lanterns, and in Episode 6, he finally made himself known.
However, Guy wasn't the only notable character from Green Lantern lore who made their first Lanterns appearance in Episode 6. In fact, while Guy has been all over the DCU for the past year (previously appearing in both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2), another character had not been in any live-action DC media since they made their big-screen debut back in 2011, a full 15 years ago. Though Carol Ferris finally appearing in the DCU is great, her cameo seemingly shoots down a big Lanterns fan theory in the process.
Episode 6, "Bad Optics," flashes forward to the present and finally follows on from the shocking end of Lanterns Episode 1, which revealed that Hal Jordan is murdered in 2026. Sheriff Kerry Kane brings back John Stewart to assist her in investigating Hal's death, returning to Rushville 10 years after the town's near-destruction in 2016. He is also one of only three people who attend Hal's funeral, alongside Kerry and a woman named Carol Ferris.
It's obvious that Hal and Carol were once involved, as she sarcastically comments that the only relationship he was able to maintain was the one attached to his hand (meaning his obsession with his Power Ring and being a Green Lantern). That said, Hal still clearly meant a lot to Carol, and she even held on to a eulogy he wrote in his younger days to be read out at his funeral. Similarly, she knew Hal's foibles well enough to intuit that he must've liked John a lot but never told him.
Carol's appearance is only a minor part of this episode, even if she is a major part of the Green Lantern mythos. Carol is typically both Hal's boss, through his day job as a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, and his primary love interest. Blake Lively famously (or, at least, infamously) played the role for the character's live-action debut in 2011's Green Lantern movie opposite Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan. Better Call Saul and 1923 actress Amie MacKenzie takes on the character for Lanterns Episode 6.
While some DC fans were happy to see Carol's cameo in Lanterns Episode 6, since she's so important to Hal's story, her appearance has also drawn criticism for that same reason. Given Carol's long and storied history in the comics, some feel a brief cameo in a single episode does her a disservice. This is especially true given that her appearance seems to rule out a fan theory about the DCU's Carol Ferris — and make Hal's superhero career less interesting — by implication.
With Carol out of the picture on Lanterns so far, DC fans theorized that she had already become Star Sapphire before the events of the series. In most versions of the character, Carol gains her own Power Ring and becomes a Star Sapphire, AKA a Violet Lantern, the love-powered Lantern Corps. Carol is usually either corrupted by the power or manipulated into becoming a supervillain, although in more recent years she has redeemed herself and even become a Justice League member.
