Black Clover's ending had long been anticipated, since the story entered its final arc in 2022. Over the last few years, the progression of Yuki Tabata's story had slowed down because of seasonal releases and hiatuses due to the deteriorating health of the author. However, the manga officially ended in May 2026, and we saw the resolution of the story, with Asta achieving the grand title of Wizard King after defeating Yuno in a one-versus-one battle.
Seeing Asta become the Wizard King by the end of the story was a given, but because of how rushed the ending was, we didn't get to see much of his new form after the timeskip, showcasing this new title. Luckily, Yuki Tabata has just released a new illustration of Asta as Wizard King. This new illustration is for the cover of the new art book releasing in November, which will give us an even better look at Wizard King Asta.
Right from the very beginning of Black Clover in 2015’s WSJ Issue #12, it was made clear to us by Yuki Tabata that both Asta and Yuno intended to become the Wizard King, which is a prestigious title bestowed only upon the strongest mage of the Clover Kingdom. Whoever attains this title becomes the leader of all the Magic Knight Squads and holds immense authority over the kingdom as a whole. To attain this title is, naturally, very hard.
Through the majority of the Black Clover story, the Wizard King position was held by Julius Novachrono, a powerful being who shared his soul with Lucius, who possesses both Time and Soul magic. He was an almost unbeatable force who acted as the final antagonist during Judgment Day. To become Wizard King, Asta had to first take down Julius. With the help of Yuno, Asta was finally able to pull this off in the Final Arc. Following this major development, Asta only had one major hurdle to overcome, and that was to best his rival, Yuno.
In Black Clover chapters 390 and 391, Asta and Yuno finally clashed and went all out. At the end of chapter 391, it was Asta who finally came out on top and proved himself as the strongest mage of the Clover Kingdom, despite being born as an anomaly with no mana. Ever since the release of Black Clover chapter 391, Asta has thus been the new official Wizard King. Sadly, Black Clover ended with chapter 392, meaning that we barely got a chance to see Asta holding this title. Yuki Tabata, however, has just given us a brand-new illustration showcasing Asta as the new Wizard King. This new illustration sheds new light on Asta's final design after the two timeskip as the 29th Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom. This new design was seen briefly in the manga in Chapter 392. In the new illustration, Tabata seems to have changed things a bit, as Asta is wearing his new fur coat and his bandana, having grown longer hair as well. He is also wielding his powerful anti-magic weapons, in a stance ready to attack. This new art has yet to be revealed in full quality, and this is only a teaser for the full-color illustration, set to be released later this year.
Black Clover technically ended on May 1, 2026, in Jump GIGA’s Spring Edition, with the finale being released in one batch that included chapters 390, 391, and 392. In all senses of the word, the Black Clover manga is over. We did get a brief return from Yuki Tabata on August 4, 2026, when he released a new guidebook and a brand-new chapter, but for many, that was the end of the franchise. However, in Black Clover's final volume 38, released on August 4, it was revealed that there is still one more project in store in the form of a brand-new artbook. To be precise, the new illustration of Asta as the Wizard King is for the occasion of this very artbook. Asta's new Wizard King illustration will act as the cover of this new release. When the artbook drops, we will get a higher-quality version of this illustration.
This new reveal is definitely exciting, and Tabata’s stunning art is set to be put on full display. Asta, as the 29th Wizard King, has just risen to power, and he is bound to be a focus of Tabata’s upcoming project, especially since there was a clear lack of it at the end of the manga. Concept art of Asta’s Wizard King designs could be revealed, and alternative fits could be seen. A new art book also means brand new art for more than just Asta. We would love for more art of the other main characters, such as Yuno and Noelle, in their final designs. Even though this is an art book, we will likely also see new information revealed through Q&A or comments by Yuki Tabata.
For fans interested in this guidebook, its official release has been confirmed for November 10, 2026. At the moment, it seems to be just an online release, but it could definitely be planned for a physical release later down the line. Any new Black Clover content is more than welcome, and we're excited to see what Tabata has in store for us.
