gamescom 2026 Cinder City Preview: A Free-to-Play Contender

The cooperative action scene feels bigger and better than it ever has, with more games coming out offering unique experiences. Be it something more story-driven such as Hazelight Studios’ adventure games or something intense such as Gears of War, there’s something for everyone.

One game that’s coming out in the near future that falls a little more into the latter category is Cinder City. Developed by Big Fire Games, and published by NC, Cinder City takes tactical action to the next level, offering a very familiar experience, wrapped together in a grim future package. At Gamescom late last month, we were able to sit down with the developers to check out what the upcoming shooter has to offer.

The story of Cinder City takes place in a near-future, post-apocalyptic Seoul, South Korea, following the Cinder Knights. There will be a handful of different characters. Seven is the default character who can stun bosses. Vulcan has a large shield and acts as a tank with a Shockwave ability to neutralize enemies. Arang is more of a sniper with her skit focusing on stealth and ambushes. Cipher is a robot who can send drones and turrets to help him in battle. And finally, Angel is a support medic class who can heal, shield and cleanse negative effects, but has some offensive capabilities, as well. There will be two more at launch, but these are the five that were showcased at the event.

Each character has their own unique quirks, and it allows for a lot of customization when it comes to getting online and interacting with other players. Cooperative play is the name of the game, as working together has never been more important. Just from the quick preview of characters, we’re most excited to check out Orang and Angel, one of which is more on their own in the shadows while the other feeds off others.

Cinder City has the makings of the next gaming blockbuster. There’s no denying Cinder City’s comparison to other shooters such as The Division – in fact, a lot of the UI and general atmosphere feels like The Division, right down to the post-apocalyptic vibes. With that said, there are elements that dramatically differ from anything we’ve seen before.

The biggest difference is the different types of enemies players will be facing off against. There are the traditional tactical human enemies, some of which have been enhanced with equipment far more advanced than you might see, but there are mutated creatures that appear in specific portions of the map. Think of it like The Division if the deadly virus turned enemies into disturbing creatures capable of tearing anything they touch apart. These are just as deadly in their own right and have various different types.

Cinder City will be a familiar experience, but one that focuses highly on cooperative action. You will be able to access the vast open world early in the campaign and undertake various missions with friends or feel free to explore what Seoul has to offer. The world will feature a shared hub where players can interact with one another, participate in side quests, field objectives and field bosses. There will even be raid-like bosses where 20–40 players will need to team up to fight together to bring them down. You will be able to get around on foot, but there will be various vehicles to acquire, as well, for faster travel.

Cinder City has the makings of the next gaming blockbuster.
