The Blood of Dawnwalker Has a Great Answer to Open-World Bloat, But There's a Catch

The Blood of Dawnwalker reviews are pouring in, and it looks like new studio Rebel Wolves is off to a fairly strong start with its debut. However, there are still plenty of features that could be ironed out and refined, with one of the main hurdles being the game's most intriguing feature of all; the in-game time limit. The Blood of Dawnwalker has been teasing a lot of great concepts, but the execution could use some work. There has been plenty of attention focused on how the vampire RPG's timer mechanic works, and even though it's still an intriguing concept, it doesn't exactly add the sense of urgency that Rebel Wolves intended.

This is probably going to disappoint gamers who have been eager to play around with the timer mechanic. It's definitely a bit of a disappointment to me, but there is still potential for it to be tweaked down the road. However, as it stands, The Blood of Dawnwalker's time limit might feel more like a gimmick than a truly useful feature that forces players to be careful when considering their actions.

Naturally, The Blood of Dawnwalker's time limit has been one of the highlights with the majority of reviews. Even the far more favorable reviews have mentioned how the timer doesn't add as much urgency to the experience as they were expecting. Each Blood of Danwalker review has addressed this issue in varying ways. Some have given Rebel Wolves a fairly forgiving pass, since it's a brand-new studio after all, while others have been more upfront about seeing The Blood of Dawnwalker's rough timer execution as a hindrance to the overall experience.

Everyone's opinion is going to differ slightly, but considering that the 30-day timer mechanic was a big selling point for The Blood of Dawnwalker's gameplay, the critiques need to be taken into consideration. Just because Rebel Wolves' debut is rough around the edges doesn't mean that it isn't worth playing, but the newness of the studio and the game being a fresh IP also doesn't excuse it from valid criticism.

GameRant's Josh Cotts reviewed The Blood of Dawnwalker, and the fact that he still had about 12 in-game days left once he leveled up Coen enough to successfully take on head vampire Brencis wasn't the only issue with the time limit. The mechanic's logic was incredibly confusing, as certain tasks that seemed like obvious quests that took away time didn't actually have any effect, while other seemingly mundane choices would make significant changes to the timer.

The time limit is there to put pressure on your choices leading up to that climax, and it's meant to make you thoughtfully consider how you're using your time to prepare for your encounter with Brencis. But when nearly everything in the game seems determined to take that time away from you, and the rules for what does and doesn't advance the clock feel so inconsistent, that pressure starts feeling incredibly arbitrary.

Not only does Rebel Wolves' execution take away the initial urgency, but the fact that upgrading skills in order to progress takes away Coen's time has the potential to cause some serious decision paralysis. Upgrading and progressing in the way that The Blood of Dawnwalker's gameplay asks you to while also losing time for doing so might leave some players feeling more punished than rewarded. When it comes to the actual amount of in-game time that players have, Game Informer had some fascinating points to add about the mechanic creating a false sense of urgency that eventually fades away.

However, the time pressure progressively eroded the closer I got to the end of the 30-day period. For reference, I was warned about the point of no return if I accepted a character's help with 13 days to spare… The moment I saw the point of no return sign, the pressure wore off entirely.
