Poppy Playtime took the horror world by storm in 2021 with the first chapter of a game that touched on the surface of a story that would grow gradually more twisted with each entry, and continues to do so now that we've passed Chapter 5 and await Chapter 6. Now, you'll be able to experience Playtime Co. in a brand-new way thanks to the newly announced Escape From Playtime.
Escape From Playtime is a co-op survival horror game that's set in Playtime Co. and allows you to play with up to three friends for a maximum of four players. Each run gives you a different experience, as the areas in the facility change and you have only one clear objective. The real challenge is surviving when you play as characters that aren't exactly the strongest, fastest, or most durable.
That's right, you'll be playing as Smiling Critters this time around. Your tasks involve finding materials for a mysterious voice for the sake of building A Better Place that will become a new home for loyal toys. This effectively means that you need to search for clues, scavenge for materials, solve puzzles, and hide to avoid the countless hostile toys lurking around the factory that's procedurally generated to keep you on your toes.
Each run gives you a different experience, as the areas in the facility change and you have only one clear objective.
Of course, Escape From Playtime's story ties into the larger narrative of Poppy Playtime, and you'll need to complete multiple runs to start piecing together the objective of the voice and what the materials you're gathering are truly being used for. As a Smiling Critter, your size will be a benefit for hiding and sneaking through the factory, since you can fit into locations that larger toys can't. However, that likely means it'll be difficult to cover a lot of ground quickly, making teamwork essential.
Escape From Playtime will enter Early Access via Steam on a not-yet-revealed date, which will allow players to provide feedback to help improve the game prior to its full release. Although in Early Access, you'll have the full roster of eight Smiling Critters, one starter zone, and a lineup of core enemies available at the initial release, Mob Entertainment states that future updates will then add more zones, Critters, features, and adjustments made to address player feedback.
I've written a lot of pieces about Poppy Playtime, and that means that I have some guesses about Escape From Playtime and what it'll show. First, I think that it takes place before the main game. In fact, I can almost guarantee it. We spend a lot of time in Poppy Playtime killing toys and destroying entire sections of the factory, but we also hear about A Better Place while there. If Escape From Playtime is focused on the Smiling Critters trying to help build A Better Place, then it has to take place earlier in the timeline.
