Free co-op games on Steam might not get the most attention, but they deserve your time. While we all know and love Split Fiction and Baldur's Gate 3, gaming has gotten so expensive that we should really be looking to take advantage of all the available freebies, and Steam has enough free-to-play games to keep a group of friends busy for months on end. They cover a wide range of genres too, from third-person shooters and puzzlers to work sims.
More importantly, these co-op games cover different group sizes, so you can enjoy a 2-player outing with your siblings or join your friends for a romp. As I know that picking a place to start can be challenging, I've put together a list of Steam's best free co-op games, covering different genres and gameplay styles. Hopefully, everybody finds something that suits them.
We'll largely ignore co-op games that focus exclusively on PvP. Counter-Strike 2 and Rainbow Six Siege X are examples of omitted games, although modes like Wingman can satisfy players looking for PvP co-op. That said, we will include a few exceptions, especially new games that you might have missed.
Also, for online co-op games, we are going to avoid Steam games with low player counts that are either dead or dying.
Before getting to the heavy hitters, I wanted to kick things off with an indie student project as an example of Steam's hidden treasures. Wires and Whiskers is a short local co-op game that lasts for well under an hour, and it is at most a two-and-done. While it might not last long, the game makes the most of every second, delivering asymmetrical gameplay that could easily serve as the foundation for a much longer campaign.
The two players control wildly different characters: one takes charge of a gerbil, and the other an exosuit. The former emphasizes platforming and melee attacks, while the latter has a long-range weapon and magnets to manipulate the environment and solve puzzles. A simple set of moves for both characters, but they handle well and are different enough from each other to potentially warrant two playthroughs.
Not every game needs to keep players busy for weeks or months; sometimes, all it takes is a fun session. Wires and Whiskers gives you that.
