If your PC has been making random pinging noises that you can’t track down, you can almost definitely pin the blame on the Epic Games Launcher.
Considering how important technology is in our day-to-day lives, I’d bet that almost every one of you can instantly recognise a specific app or game sound without any trouble. Whether it be Discord, Steam, Gmail, or my personal earworm, Slack, a ton of platforms have very specific noises that are ingrained in all of our brains, for better or worse.
That makes it all the more worrying when you start hearing a sound from something on your PC, but have no idea what it could possibly be, which is exactly what has been happening to a ton of gamers lately. As it turns out, the culprit for a lot of annoying confusion is one we probably should have guessed a lot quicker.
Over on Twitter, reliable Fortnite insider FireMonkey shed some light on the Discord-esque “ba bing” noises that a lot of us have been hearing from our PC lately. According to them, the noises all come from the Epic Games Launcher, and represent party users leaving and joining, messages received, party joinability changing, and push-to-talk activation.
Since those are all things that happen in the background quite a lot, it’s no surprise that everyone’s been hearing these noises pretty frequently. Epic also didn’t inform anyone of the sound effects, which is why so many people have been confused about what app could possibly be making so many random sounds.
FireMonkey also confirmed that you can delete the noises, but that doing so is likely a temporary fix at best since it’ll be reverted after any update.
As if figuring out the noises wasn’t enough, the official Fortnite Status account even replied to the thread, thanking FireMonkey for the feedback and confirming that “these party chimes are triggering more often than we intended”. The launcher is being updated now to narrow the events that play these sounds, which hopefully means hearing less of them.
While that’s a step in the right direction, many are replying to the comment asking for an option to just turn them off altogether, while expressing frustration with Epic not making this clear from the get-go. Considering all of the hate that EGS already gets, annoying its entire user base isn’t exactly helping its case.
