Not long into your exploration of Vale Sangora in The Blood of Dawnwalker, Coen may stumble upon a woman being attacked in the woods by two of Brencis' men. You can either choose to deal with them through violence or money, but all that matters is that you get rid of them. Once they're gone, you'll have the opportunity to ask Sara about a man you've heard of named Crake.
Sara will end up leading Coen into a trap, in which he'll wake up tied to a tree because he asked questions about Crake and the Manumits. This is the first time you'll meet Crake, whom you can attempt to plead your case to, but unless you've made a lot of progress by this point, it won't be enough to convince them to consider you. You'll be left with a promise to seek you out if you manage to prove your worth.
While the initial interaction above can play out a few different ways depending on what quests you complete, the ultimate result will be the same. You'll need to prove yourself before you can join the Manumits and get to know Crake. To do this, you need to increase your infamy level on the Court tab to Notorious.
This can be done by defeating members of the court, doing things that anger them, and, overall, just being a pest for the Vrakhiri. Once you've reached an acceptable level, Sara will meet with you in Svartrau City and lead you to the hideout, where you'll be made an official member.
At this point, you'll start having quests associated with Crake and the Manumits, which will be your first step towards romancing Crake. The first quest assigned to you by the group will be a solo mission where you head out to see what happened to a group that hasn't returned.
During this quest, you'll learn that an unknown monster attacked the missing group, and Crake will ask you to go with him to learn more about the creature.
Be aware that you can romance more than one companion in the game. Romancing Crake does not lock you into an ending, nor does it prevent you from romancing Anca and Lacra.
This first mission with Crake is What Hunts The Night. During it, you'll meet up with Crake and Sara and learn that the monster who took out a few of their members is a gargoyle-type creature someone created.
