The PS5 has been a renaissance era of sorts for the JRPG, and for old school purists like me and new age JRPG fans, there seems to have been something for just about everyone.
Luckily, the old school grindfest has been something mostly left in the past, and instead, exploring massive worlds has become the main way to play these games, with leveling being something that's still present, but done in a more organic way than it used to be.
We're going to check out some PS5 JRPGs that reward exploring more than grinding.
Octopath Traveler 0 is an awesome throwback game that deviates significantly from the formula of the other two games in the series and instead gives you a massive JRPG with tons of party members. While there are random battles, there is so much to gain just by exploring the world and the various cities and towns you can find.
Just exploring the different explorable maps will get you tons of money, items, and equipment, but then you can come back later with different characters and unlock even further things. Then, with the towns and cities, you can talk to and challenge tons of characters to duels for unique equipment and abilities, and this never gets old, as it seems each person you can approach has something new to offer, and plenty of people who you can't beat in the beginning can be returned to later once you're stronger. You can also find entirely new party members just by exploring, as many of the characters in the game are optional to get.
Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven is an epic journey taking place across multiple generations, and exploration is the name of the game here. Your level doesn't matter as much as what you're doing in the world itself. This game is completely non-linear, and it's up to you to explore the world and see what it has to offer.
