The Elder Scrolls VI is taking such a long time to release that it's become something of a meme. It's allegedly finally in development, but it'll likely still be some years before we hear any concrete news. However, that doesn't mean that nothing has happened in The Elder Scrolls. Elder Scrolls Online has been active ever since it launched in 2014, and has had regular content updates to the point that it's unrecognizable.

There are a lot of reasons to play ESO now, both as a way to kill time while waiting for TESVI and for ESO's own sake. It's a good game and anyone who likes TES in any capacity will probably also enjoy ESO. Here are some reasons you should take the plunge and play it right now.

I say from experience that it's annoying when you're expecting a sequel to a beloved single-player RPG series and the next game is instead an MMO. MMOs by their nature cannot have a story as intentional and contained as a single-player game, which comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

One of the disadvantages is playing with random strangers and, as a woman, having to potentially navigate harassment from other players. However, ESO is very playable as a single-player game, which is how I play it most of the time. It's a good enough game that I would recommend to those who want to stick to the parts that you can do as a single-player.

On the other hand, ESO is a great MMO, and it does a lot of the things MMOs have really well. The entire Imperial City in Cyrodiil is a PvP area, it has dungeons where having other players nearby to help out is a plus, it's possible to play co-op, and it has events that have been well-received by its players. Having an MMO run and getting continuous support and seasons for 12 years is no joke, and the reason it's survived this long is that it's genuinely a good game.

Aside from PvP, ESO's PvE also shines, particularly when playing co-op. The environments are beautiful, and there's a lot of really good storytelling and side quests to experience with friends.

There are a lot of ESO classes. This gives you a lot of creativity when building your character, but it also lends itself to a robust and versatile combat system. You have all the main roles you'd expect from an RPG here, as well as their subclasses. They align closely with The Elder Scrolls' lore, but they're also unique enough to feel like a part of ESO.
