Ubisoft's For Honor is officially ending support for multiple platforms on September 10. Almost 10 years after its initial release, For Honor players will lose support on two major platforms, bringing about the end of an era for the game.
For Honor was first released in February 2017, and actually received middling reviews from critics. On OpenCritic, the game has a Top Critic Average of 77 - not terrible, but far from brilliant, either. Despite this, For Honor has continued to receive frequent new updates from Ubisoft, ensuring a regular slate of content over the years. As a result, it has maintained a solid population, many of whom will be sad to see it leave these two platforms.
In a recent Ranked FAQ, Ubisoft revealed that it is removing For Honor from Linux altogether, stating that it is doing so to "ensure a safer environment for our players as we cannot meaningfully deploy protection on this platform." This change will go ahead on September 10, 2026. Because it's unplayable on Linux, it will also be unplayable on the Steam Deck and SteamOS from this date. Given that the game plays pretty well on the Steam Deck, it's definitely a sad state of affairs for fans.

It's not all sad news, though. In the same announcement, Ubisoft confirmed that it will "continue to investigate different ways to improve our anti-cheat with the possibility of reopening the platform in the future," leaving the possibility of For Honor returning to Linux and Steam Deck/SteamOS open. Hopefully, the news reaches players before the September 10 shutdown end-of-service date, because there could be confusion for anyone who finds out they can't play anymore overnight.

It's unclear just how many players will be affected by For Honor's Linux and Steam Deck shutdown. According to SteamDB, the third-person multiplayer game has a very healthy population for a title of its age, regularly peaking at over 5,000 concurrent players. However, it's impossible to dissect how many of those play on Linux or the Steam Deck, leaving it up to speculation. That said, it's still unfortunate that some will now be unable to play the game as a result of these changes. If they're still playing For Honor in 2026, they're probably a pretty hardcore fan, which makes it all the more upsetting for them.
