Star Wars is one of the biggest franchises, grossing billions in movies, TV and merchandise, but there’s also another field that continuously is a driving factor for creative freedom: video games.
With the release of Star Wars Zero Company a couple of weeks ago, we were able to sit down with Bitreactor’s Creative Director and CEO, Greg Foertsch and Animation Lead Hector Antunez to discuss the challenges of creating a new type of game in the beloved franchise, and what they have planned for the future.
Note that this interview was conducted a couple of days before the game was launched, so some of the questions will reference the game’s imminent release.
[Hardcore Gamer] How has it been working with one of the biggest franchises in the world the last few years?
[Greg Foertsch] It's been really good. We've been very fortunate with our partners, especially with Lucasfilm. They've just been really supportive, really helped allow us to tell the story we wanted to tell. That's just super supportive of the game, doing something that they hadn't done before. It is a new genre for them, and again, not only that, but just like they've been supportive of us in the studio, which is even more important to us.
How involved have they been in terms of storytelling, in terms of feedback for gameplay?
[Greg] It's really collaborative. We met with them a couple of times a week with different disciplines, like art and the narrative touch base. And it's usually a conversation about, hey, we're thinking this, we're doing that. Sometimes we'll ask for guidance to make sure we're staying true to the IP. But it's a real collaborative conversation with them.
Generally, if there's something that we need an answer to that doesn't exist, [they] always encourage us to come up with something or just try to help us find a way to get to a yes, or an answer so that we can work on the game. A lot of their stuff comes from “what does the game need?” I think that’s where they always start – “What do you need for the game?” And then let's talk about how we solved it. So, it's been really good.
