There's no denying that Strategy titles haven't always been the talk of the town in the gaming world, but that doesn't mean they aren't still really good games. For the most part, strategy games only fit into a handful of small categories, and very few ever really add anything or stray too much from the norm.

Because it is a more niche genre, many games simply aren't known or talked about much, even though some contributed not only to the growth of the strategy genre, but to other genres too. All ten of these games pushed the bounds of strategy games in one way or another.

While they might not be some of the greatest strategy games ever released, they changed the genre for the better. Whether it's opening up the genre to new, unthought-of paths or creating systems that would be co-opted by more games down the line. There may be some even more obscure titles that fell through the cracks, but these were what I found that fit the bill.

Perimeter Game Play-1

This one is incredibly dated, but that doesn't make it any less important. Perimeter, a 2004 game, was one of the first to come up with the idea behind taking over space in an RTS. The titular system, Perimeter, is one of the first of its kind in the RTS world, given that many before didn't involve the idea of taking space.

Taking territory and claiming it for yourself using various other mechanics is now something that seems rather commonplace, and that's all thanks to Perimeter. Expanding the area you controlled and gaining bonuses for it wasn't seen as a good thing at the time, but clearly it stuck, as now this is a more integral part of all kinds of strategy games.

Ogre Battle Combat

Back in the early '90s, there were a lot of games that would go on to influence every genre imaginable, and one of those games was Ogre Battle. This strategy RTS game didn't just push the strategy genre forward; it really pushed all gaming forward by utilizing a system that hadn't been seen much before.

The Moral Alignment system was something that wasn't seen as being very important and created more problems than anything else, given that it would create branching story pathways. While not lauded as revolutionary at the time, it's very obvious that today many games have something similar, especially many popular RPGs.
