Star Wars Zero Company Becomes XCOM With This Overhaul To Injuries

Star Wars Zero Company is giving many of us our first XCOM fix in years, but there are some differences that set it apart. One of those differences is that Star Wars Zero Company is a little more on the forgiving side, making it harder to permanently lose an operator to injuries.

So, of course, fans are already finding ways to bring Zero Company to XCOM's level. One way they're doing that is with the new mod, Mortal Wounds, from Nexus Mods user jayman273. This overhauls how injuries are handled in-game, dishing them out based on the damage you take, not just when a character is downed.

"This mod is designed to recreate the feeling XCOM had, where reaching 0 health could mean permanent death. It does this by redesigning how injuries trigger," the mod's description reads. "Every hit your squad takes now carries a little risk. Every time someone gets shot, there's a small chance — 0.40% per point of damage — that the hit leaves them with an injury."

With the mod installed, the more powerful a hit, the higher the chance that it leaves an injury. That makes sense, since in the base game, you can put your operators through a ridiculous amount of damage and have them complete the mission without a scratch, as long as their HP never hits zero.

Now, there is a safety rail in place to ensure you don't get a random death that you couldn't have really prevented: the mod won't add an injury to anyone who already has one. That is to avoid a scenario where an operator with zero injuries gets some bad rolls and stacks up three during the enemy turn. However, it does mean that your otherwise healthy operator can stack up two injuries during the enemy turn - one through taking damage, and another by getting downed. So, the threat is still very much present.

If you're looking for more ways to mix up your next run, you aren't short on options. Already, we have a Star Wars Zero Company mod that lets you take six operators out at a time, and another that adds a proper endgame.
