HBO's The Last of Us adaptation got off to such a great start, only for everything to fall apart as soon as the second season dropped. After this, any chatter of the show continuing for multiple more seasons came to an end, and it was generally accepted that it would end with a third season.
However, it's unclear if this has actually been decided at the higher levels. Speaking with Deadline (as spotted by Eurogamer), HBO boss Casey Bloys could give us a definitive answer on whether The Last of Us will end in its third season. He can't even give us a release window beyond the vague promise of it coming to us in 2027.
First, Bloys is asked about The Last of Us Season 3's release date. "It’ll be happening in ’27. I don’t have a date," he says.
He isn't much more forthcoming when he's asked whether or not this will be the final season of the show: "I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season."
On the other hand, Bloys was much chattier when asked about HBO's other shows, like the various Game of Thrones and DC spinoffs.
This only contributes to the lack of excitement we've seen going into the third season. Earlier this month, series co-creator Neil Druckmann once again distanced himself from the production, having previously confirmed he would not be involved so he could focus on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This time, he went as far as saying that Naughty Dog as a whole had anything to do with the show anymore, and seemed eager to remind everyone that the future of the franchise as a whole was in the game studio's hands.
For this reason, Druckmann could not give us an update on how production has been going either. Indeed, it's been a lot quieter this time around, although we already know that it will be depicting the story from Abby's point of view this time, trying to replicate the twist from the game The Last of Us Part 2.
Meanwhile, showrunner Craig Mazin is looking ahead to his next project: a TV adaptation of Baldur's Gate 3. This will continue the events after the game and include game characters. The response from Baldur's Gate fans has been largely negative so far, with some wary of Mazin as a showrunner and frustrated that the show will almost definitely have to ignore the various decisions we made in-game, coming up with its own canon.
