The next set coming to Magic: The Gathering is doing something the game has rarely done before, with Reality Fracture introducing a brand-new type of card allowing players to create Planeswalker tokens. The Magic expansion introduces a wealth of new cards and unusual mechanics.
Reality Fracture is set to be Magic: The Gathering's final in-universe set of 2026, and one of its boldest yet. The set is focused on the alternate "Echoverse" created by popular planeswalker Jace, re-imagining a version of the Magic universe without the Phyrexians and Eldrazi. The set includes alternate versions of many of the TCG's most popular characters in different colors, including the mono-blue Chandra, Chill of Compliance and the mono-white Liliana the Faultless. However, one set of cards from Reality Fracture is introducing a brand-new keyword mechanic that allows players to create an unusual type of token.
Reality Fracture officially introduces the Empower keyword to the game, featured on several cards from the set. Empower allows players to place loyalty counters on a Planeswalker token they control, with Wizards showing several cards from the Reality Fracture expansion specifically Empowering Jace. If the player doesn't control a Jace planeswalker when they play a card with Empower, the card creates a Jace planeswalker token, coming with powerful abilities allowing players to Surveil and draw cards. Empower marks the first time Magic: The Gathering has allowed players to create a unique Planeswalker token, rather than just a copy of one they already have.

Magic's new Empower mechanic does something that the game has rarely experimented with before. Wizards of the Coast has released a handful of cards throughout the game's history that allow players to copy Magic: The Gathering's Planeswalker cards, though the cards have only ever duplicated pre-existing Planeswalkers. Multiple cards with the Empower mechanic were revealed during the Reality Fracture Debut Stream, appearing on Instants, Sorceries, and even as triggered abilities on some Creatures within the set.

The idea of a Jace token coincides nicely with the set's overall theming around Jace's alternate version of reality. Wizards of the Coast previously revealed that each pack of Reality Fracture that includes one of the new "Echoed Pairs" of characters will also include the other version in the same pack. The set goes beyond individual characters with its copy/echo themes as well, even including an entire alternate version of the magical school of Strixhaven with schools in different color pairings, such as the White-Blue Fatehold and the Green-White Vigorbloom.
