Since those last minute origins, Halo has reigned as a multiplayer juggernaut on Xbox consoles for decades, garnering millions of fans from across the globe and creating countless online memories that have lasted lifetimes.
With Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of Halo: CE, notably releasing with no PvP or PvE multiplayer beyond campaign co-op, now is a perfect time to look back at Halo's multiplayer systems and rank them by their gameplay, modes, progression, matchmaking, and overall fun factor.
This list only includes Halo titles that feature PvP or PvE multiplayer systems, not games that only feature campaign co-op like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Halo: Spartan Assault, or Halo: Fireteam Raven.
After Gears of War 2 debuted it's excellent PvE mode called Horde, which had players face off against increasingly difficult waves of Locust troops, multiple games strove to replicate the mode for their own series. Halo 3: ODST did just that in 2009 with the debut of Firefight.
Here, up to four players can be dropped on maps based on campaign levels as ODSTs, where they must survive against increasingly lethal waves of Covenant forces, with each round activating Skull modifiers to make combat more difficult.
While Halo 3: ODST's iteration of Firefight was a ton of fun, it was held back by the lack of matchmaking, forcing people to only play with others via friend invites, system link, or messaging people beyond Xbox 360 services, making playing Firefight with friends particularly awkward.
