The Golden Trio survives a lot of close calls throughout Harry Potter. Hermione Granger, in particular, found herself in numerous dangerous situations, including the troll encounter during her first year at Hogwarts, being Petrified by the Basilisk in The Chamber of Secrets, and being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange at Malfoy Manor in Deathly Hallows. However, one of Hermione's most dangerous encounters is easy to forget, especially because the movie makes considerably less of it.
During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hermione comes surprisingly close to death thanks to Death Eater Antonin Dolohov. The movie dramatically simplifies what actually took place during Hermione and Dolohov's conflict, and it's a much more significant event in J.K. Rowling's book. Stranger still, Harry Potter never gives the curse a name or incantation, leaving one of the Wizarding World's most mysterious pieces of dark magic largely unexplained.
The Battle of the Department of Mysteries is one of Order of the Phoenix's biggest sequences, but the movie cuts a lot from its book counterpart. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Ginny, and Luna still travel to the Department after Voldemort plants a vision in Harry's mind to make him believe Sirius Black is being tortured there. They discover the Chosen One prophecy before Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, and other Death Eaters confront them, leading to a chase through the Department.
However, the Order of the Phoenix doesn't adapt many of the individual fights and injuries that Dumbledore's Army suffers from in the book. The Department itself is considerably less elaborate, too, cutting its chaotic, maze-like layout and reducing the book's frantic chase sequence. Instead, the Death Eaters overwhelm and capture the group before the Order of the Phoenix arrives, and the movie lessens one particularly nasty encounter from the books: Hermione's fight with Antonin Dolohov and the unidentified curse that leaves Harry briefly believing his best friend might be dead.
Things are much worse for Hermione in the Order of the Phoenix book. During the film's much faster battle, Dolohov is among the Death Eaters fighting Dumbledore's Army, and he strikes Hermione during a chaotic exchange of spells. However, the adaptation doesn't recreate the distinctive attack described in the book, or establish that Hermione suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. In the book, Harry, Hermione, and Neville are attempting to escape the Death Eaters when Dolohov tries to alert the others to their location. Hermione quickly hits him with Silencio, the Silencing charm, to prevent him from revealing their location.
However, stopping Dolohov from speaking doesn't prevent him from casting a spell, and as he makes a sudden slashing motion with his wand, he produces a purple flame-like streak that strikes Hermione in the chest. In the movie, she looks like she's stunned or knocked out, but in the book, she immediately crumples to the floor and lies motionless, leaving Harry terrified that Dolohov killed her. Neville eventually finds a pulse, but Hermione remains incapacitated, and Neville carries her with him while he and Harry look for the others. The consequences also continue long after the battle: Hermione requires ongoing treatment from Madam Pomfrey – having to take 10 different types of healing potions every day – and the fact that Dolohov had been silenced apparently prevented his curse from doing even greater damage. Effectively, the Order of the Phoenix movie left out the mysterious nature, severity, and aftermath of Dolohov's purple curse.
Despite the attention given to its effects in The Order of the Phoenix book, Dolohov's curse is never properly identified. The books don't provide a name or incantation for it, and the purple flame-like streak doesn't connect it neatly to other Harry Potter curses. Hermione eventually recovers, but she does report an ongoing pain around her ribs. She explains that Madam Pomfrey told her it had already caused considerable damage, despite Dolohov not being able to say the incantation aloud. In other words, the version of the curse that knocked Hermione unconscious wasn't even the spell at its most effective.
Considering the damage caused by the spell's weaker version, casting Silencio saved Hermione from a much worse fate. Dolohov actually uses the same spell against Harry later on in the battle, but Harry manages to cast Protego. Even with the Shield charm around him, the impact is powerful enough to knock Harry off his feet. He even looks ready to use the curse against Sirius before Harry interrupts him with Petrificus Totalus.
