Dragon Ball Super is gearing up for a massive comeback. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is going to release in just a few months, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol is rumored to drop shortly after the new anime remake wraps up sometime in 2027, and Toyotarou keeps dropping hints that the Dragon Ball Super manga is going to come out of hiatus soon. Every month, Toyotarou either drops new art or makes a comment that strongly suggests the Black Frieza Saga is right around the corner.
One way or another, Dragon Ball Super is about to enter a new golden age and there's going to be a new Super Saiyan in the roster, as revealed by Toyotarou himself. The Dragon Ball franchise isn't afraid of introducing new Saiyans or SSJs, especially these days in a series filled with multiverses and alternate timelines, but the latest Super Saiyan may be Dragon Ball's strangest yet – and "strongest," as far as the people of Earth are concerned.
Hercule has been Earth's champion since he famously defeated Cell and his special effects at the Cell Games (according to himself, at least). While he obviously cannot compare in strength to the Z-Fighters, Hercule's Power Level is genuinely impressive compared to the average human. As far as non-Ki-using Earthlings go, Hercule is genuinely the strongest guy around. In honor of Mr. Satan looking after humanity so well, Toyotarou has honored Earth's greatest hero by giving him his own Super Saiyan form.
Hercule already has a fake Super Saiyan form in Dragon Ball Super called "Super Satan," but Toyotarou's latest entry in his monthly special illustration column specifically calls Mr. Satan's form "Super Saiyan," not the fake Super Satan. The translated text on Toyotarou's recent Super Saiyan Mr. Satan art reads, "This is just a fantasy of mine — Mr. Satan transforming after gaining the power of a God... He rose to fame based on the story that he saved the Earth, but perhaps, for the people, it doesn't really matter whether that’s true or not. Everyone just loves Mr. Satan!" It turns out that Toyotarou and the people of Earth weren't the only ones who loved Mr. Satan.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hercule was one of Akira Toriyama's favorite Dragon Ball characters. By the end of Dragon Ball Z, Mr. Satan became one of the protagonists alongside Goku and Vegeta, playing an even larger role in the final battle than Gohan. Toriyama was a master of the shonen manga format, but he was a gag artist at heart and Hercule allowed him to re-inject the last few years of DBZ with some of the comedy that helped define early Dragon Ball.
Hercule also received some shockingly well written character development, as his relationship with Majin Buu gradually turns him into a genuine hero – something that pays off majorly during the last battle with Kid Buu, and with Goku's Super Spirit Bomb. It's clear Toriyama even liked the cruder version of Hercule from the Cell Games, as evidenced by how colorful (and out of character) the Z-Fighters' insults towards Earth's champion are. Mr. Satan hasn't done much in Dragon Ball Super, but the series wouldn't be the same without him and Super Saiyan Hercule might be a sign that he'll have more to do in the Black Frieza Saga.
