Former Xbox studio Double Fine is in the midst of embracing the independent life again after leaving Microsoft over the past couple of months, and they've recently thrown up a new Kickstarter project called "AMNESIA FORTNIGHT" that serves as a game jam where people can vote on the ideas they want to see become a reality.
The fundraiser itself has almost already reached its goal of £296,238 with another month still to go, so it's certainly proven a success. However, the "Stretch Goals" section is getting a lot of attention as well, which mentions that they'll make Brütal Legend 2 if they can fundraise the seemingly impossible amount of $100 million USD.
Some believed this was just a joke, but Double Fine doubled down that they'd "love" to make the game if possible:
The reaction to this has actually been quite negative in some circles, with people questioning why it wasn't possible to make Brütal Legend 2 when they were under the ownership of Xbox, but ultimately we don't know the answer to that.
Perhaps Double Fine did want to make Brütal Legend 2 but Xbox leadership weren't keen on it? Perhaps there were issues around music licensing that Microsoft didn't want to touch? Maybe we'll find out the reasons someday.
As things stand here in September of 2026, it seems very unlikely that Double Fine will able to raise enough money to make this game a reality, but they are still working on projects both big and small, and we can't wait to see what the studio has in store for the future regardless.
