Until Dawn 2 has confirmed some significant connections to the original game, including a return to a major location and a familiar face. The upcoming Until Dawn 2 follows a new cast of characters caught up in another supernatural mystery, featuring a new supernatural threat, locations, and a standalone story.
Firesprite initially revealed Until Dawn 2 in June 2026 as a new story centered around Dead True, a group of paranormal content creators known for staging encounters for their videos. Their situation changes after the crew experiences something genuinely supernatural, eventually setting them on a journey toward Akishima Island in the South Pacific. With eight new protagonists and a different primary setting, the sequel initially appeared to be more of a thematic continuation of Until Dawn than a direct follow-up to the events on Blackwood Mountain. However, Firesprite has now confirmed that the sequel will make some direct callbacks to the original.
A new trailer shown during PlayStation's State of Play on September 3 has now established much stronger ties between the two Until Dawn games. Set to launch on January 28, 2027, Until Dawn 2's new cast of characters will be taken to Blackwood Sanatorium as part of the story, which was a major location in the original game. The group appears to visit the abandoned facility to film an episode about the tragic events that occurred there 12 years earlier, where new intern Izzy, played by Sarah Catherine Hook, discovers something that changes their plans. The new trailer also reconfirms the return of Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill, another significant connection to the first Until Dawn. The Dead True crew later travels to HorrorCon in Sydney, Australia, before becoming involved with Yoona, a survivor of a supernatural entity who draws the group toward Akishima Island.
Returning fans will know that Blackwood Sanatorium played an important role in uncovering the mystery behind the original Until Dawn's supernatural threat. Mike explored the abandoned facility while pursuing the Stranger and found evidence of miners trapped beneath Blackwood Mountain decades earlier. Those events helped explain the history of the Wendigos encountered throughout the game. The location later became the primary setting of The Inpatient PSVR prequel, making Blackwood Sanatorium one of the most important recurring locations in the Until Dawn universe.

Dr. Hill's return also creates another interesting connection, although exactly how Peter Stormare's character fits into the new story remains unknown. In the first game, his appearances were closely tied to Joshua Washington, played by Rami Malek, with Dr. Hill addressing the player between chapters as Josh's mental state deteriorated. Firesprite has not confirmed that Josh or any of the original survivors will return, meaning Dr. Hill's presence should not be taken as evidence that a particular character survived. However, his involvement could suggest that Until Dawn 2 may preserve more of the original game's structure and mythology than its new cast and location initially implied.
That still leaves plenty of room for Until Dawn 2 to establish an identity of its own. Most of the new story still seems to revolve around Dead True and the supernatural events on Akishima Island, while Blackwood may give Firesprite a natural way to connect the new story directly to the events of the original. Until Dawn 2 may still be a standalone story, but Blackwood Sanatorium and Dr. Hill make it increasingly clear that longtime fans could have far more connections to uncover when it launches on January 28.
