Diablo 5 Lead Writer Jennifer Hepler Is A BioWare Legend

Diablo 5 Lead Writer Jennifer Hepler Is A BioWare Legend

Diablo 5 was announced at BlizzCon 2026 this year, set to launch in 2029. With the release date being so far away, there's not too much we can say about it now, but there is something else to glean from its flashy announcement at the Blizzard convention: the writing is in good hands.

At BlizzCon, it was revealed that Jennifer Hepler is stepping in as narrative director, in her Diablo-series debut. Now, if you're a BioWare fan, you have likely heard her name before, because her previous work on Dragon Age gave us some of the best parts of the series, including several companions.

Jennifer Hepler was at BioWare from 2005 to 2013. Many would see this as BioWare's golden age, as this gave us the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Jade Empire, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Specifically, Hepler worked on Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, SWTOR, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, the latter of which launched after she left the studio. Looking even closer, Hepler was responsible for much of the dwarven content in DA:O, including the Dwarven Commoner background. Both dwarven backgrounds are massively underrated, but honestly, nothing beats rising from the castless to saving Thedas - even spitting on the face of tradition by becoming a paragon.

After that, Hepler was "second-in-command" to David Gaider on Dragon Age 2. It's well known that she wrote Anders - the wonderfully divisive mage companion - but, as per her LinkedIn, she wrote much of the mage/templar conflict, as well as the Hawke family drama. Speaking in an interview earlier this year, Gaider told me that Hepler single-handedly wrote the DLC companion, Sebastian, as well.

Hepler is credited with early work on the Inquisition companion, Cassandra. Her work on the mage/templar war bled into that game, too.

Hepler left BioWare in 2013, a year before Dragon Age: Inquisition. Unfortunately, this was amidst a campaign of harassment against Hepler, as she was blamed for Dragon Age 2's ills. After this, she stayed in the industry, but this position on Diablo 5 is her most prominent role since leaving BioWare by far.

Diablo is set to launch in spring 2029. Given how far away that is, it will almost definitely be launching on hardware we haven't actually seen yet.
