Whether or not Marvel’s Wolverine is the best Marvel game ever made is certainly a topic we could debate until the cows come home, but in spite of everything, I would say the game fills two very important niches: first, it’s a game starring Wolverine exclusively, which we haven’t had in a while, and second, it’s a traditional linear action game which, in a sea of overstuffed open worlds, I think we could always use more of, frankly.
I wouldn’t begrudge anyone who really enjoyed Marvel’s Wolverine in spite of everything, but when you do love this kind of game, you end up with a little problem: wanting more games like it that may or may not be easy to find. The good news is that traditional action-centric games are still out there in force, both in the current age and in just a few ages past. If you’ve got a hankering for high-speed action and more than a little bit of viscera following Logan’s little romp, these are the games that could best sate that craving.
Part of Wolverine’s appeal as an action character is that, despite his relatively short stature, he is a frighteningly fast and agile combatant. It comes with the whole “animalistic hunter” thing; he runs fast, jumps long distances, and is able to close the gap with his prey in roughly the time it takes for them to realize they’re about to get skewered. If high mobility is what you’re craving in an action game, one of the speediest is probably Vanquish.
Originally released in 2010, then gradually ported to current platforms starting in 2017, Vanquish is a third-person shooter where mobility is the order of the day. The crux of the gameplay is our hero Sam Gideon’s special suit, equipped with a multitude of booster rockets that allow him to slide along the ground in any direction at high speed. This allows you to evade, vault, and close distances very quickly, and coupled with your ability to slow time either manually or in emergencies, you can quickly reach vantage points and pepper enemies’ weak points with bullets.
I remember when the word came down that Marvel’s Wolverine was going to be a linear experience, as opposed to the open-world gameplay Insomniac had popularized with Marvel’s Spider-Man, there was some understandable disappointment from the crowd. As I said, I do appreciate a well-designed linear action game, but if you absolutely have to have that kind of visceral combat in an open-world setting, your next best choice would probably be Prototype.
Prototype in an open-world sandbox game in which the amnesiac Alex Mercer uses his gross mutant powers to tear through a military occupation and other horrifying monsters in an effort to figure out who the heck he is. As you progress through the game, you unlock numerous abilities reminiscent of Wolverine’s, including soaring jumps and deployable claws, alongside other delightfully freakish mutations like a whip arm, gliding, and consuming people to disguise yourself as them. If you like all that violence, well, strap in, there’s gonna be a lot of that.
