I'm not a kid that grew up heavy into the world of Gundam and all the vast array of media that surrounds it. Of course, there's something pretty universally cool about piloting a giant mech to help save the world, but for whatever reason, this genre of entertainment still wasn't on my radar much as I grew up.

All of that aside, when given the opportunity to go hands-on with the forthcoming Gundam Rogue Orbit while at gamescom in August, I was still very interested in seeing how Bandi Namco's latest foray into the Gundam-verse was shaping up. I'm a huge Souls player, and so any game these days that can be described as third-person action with big boss fights is still something I'm just inherently intrigued by.

Of course, despite sharing a publisher, there is still plenty to distinguish a game like Gundam Rogue Orbit from the FromSoftware catalog, which is typically my preference. But after playing one mission of this upcoming action game between three different builds/loadouts of mech, I'm actually currently much more interested in this game than I thought I would be initially. So far, it's slick, fluid, visually striking, and above all, very fun. Let's suit up.

Aside from remasters, the last game in the genre from Bandai was 2024's Gundam Breaker 4. I didn't play this game, and while it actually has pretty solid reviews and player feedback overall, I can't help but think from watching gameplay footage that Rogue Orbit is going to be something pretty vastly different. This is mainly in the fact that Rogue Orbit seems bigger, more engaging, and simply more impressive by most measuring stick metrics. All of that to say, if you've been into recent Gundam games before, I think you're in for a treat with Rogue Orbit and how it seems to be pushing things forward.

The game really looks awesome from a visual presentation standpoint. The mechs we get to pilot in the game are loaded with detail, and the setting of the level I got to play on some type of outer space base was cool to explore, with a visual tone that actually reminded me most so far of Capcom's 2026 standout, Pragmata.

From what I've played to this point, Gundam Rogue Orbit feels like a AAA gaming experience, and one that's jam-packed with great designs, style out the wazoo, and a backbone of fun and engaging gameplay to tie everything up in one, premium-feeling Gundam package. The portrayal of the game's human characters in general really drives this home, all of which look equally impressive and thoughtfully designed even when standing next to the mechs that likely took most of the devs' programming work to realize.

I didn't get to experiment with it myself, but Rogue Orbit is also said to boast a robust Gundam customization system, and I'm excited to tweak and rebuild my mech in the full game to the exact visual specification I see fit. It's not just aesthetic preferences with the mech customization though, as we'll also be able to fine-tune loadouts to fit the playstyle we each prefer as well.
