Rumours of a Square Enix buyout have been doing the rounds over the last 24 hours or so, and they actually got so loud that the publisher itself has had to come out and address them.

The whispers stemmed from a Japanese business magazine, which suggested that Square Enix was on course to being privately traded — that is, acquired and removed from public trading.

There was immediate movement in Japan, where Square Enix's stock price actually increased for a brief time.

Of course, here in the gaming sphere, the whole thing sparked a lot of speculation; this isn't the first time that Square Enix has been linked to potential buyouts, and so names like Sony, Microsoft, and other tech giants were being thrown around without a care.

But no, Square Enix has flat-out denied any intentions to go private. An official statement on the matter says that there is "no truth" to the rumours.

Still, given recent dealings, you can see why people jumped the gun. Earlier this year, an investment consortium completed its eye-watering $55 billion acquisition of EA, owning 100% of the company and removing it from public trading.

As it stands, then, Square Enix will remain a public traded company for the foreseeable future — although that future has looked slightly shaky over the last few years.

That's mainly because a major shareholder, Singapore-based activist investment fund 3D Investment Partners, has been putting pressure on the publisher's leadership, arguing that disappointing financials are a key indicator of the business' decline.
