Despite the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 being accompanied by the newest incarnation of Mario Kart, Mario Kart World, the game’s immediate predecessor, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, is still going strong despite being nearly a decade old and having long since released all of its DLC content. As much as Nintendo would probably prefer that everyone migrate over to World, the writing on the wall is pretty clear: people still want to play 8 Deluxe, and the best course of action is to provide updates to facilitate that.
This week, Nintendo released the new version 4.0.0 patch for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. While it was already possible to play the game on Switch 2 consoles due to their inherent backwards compatibility with Switch games, this patch is designed to bring the game’s performance a little more in line with the console’s higher output, improving visuals and shortening load times. In addition to these practical bits, the patch has also added a couple of balance tweaks and, more interestingly, a couple of entirely new features.
The patch has already rolled out to all Switch and Switch 2 users. If your console is set to Auto-Update games, you’ve probably got it already, but if you don’t, you’ll need to manually download and install it, as you won’t be allowed to play online without the patch.
According to the official patch notes, the first and foremost change to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is formal support for the Switch 2 framework. This includes the ability to better utilize the console’s specs and better compatibility with high-resolution TVs, resulting in clearer, crisper visuals for both racers and environments. Thanks to the Switch 2’s better processing power, the game has also had its load times on the console reduced, allowing you to get into both races and battles faster.
For any Switch 2 users who actually bought the camera thing, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now features support for CameraPlay, allowing you to activate your USB camera and show your face in a little window during online play in a GameChat session. If you don’t want to use this feature, you can turn it off in the game’s settings.
