Given that Halo: Campaign Evolved basically confirms plans for another remake in an unlockable ending scene, it's surprising to hear that the series' next game will apparently be a brand new, mainline title.
This fresh rumour comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who credit an unnamed source in their coverage of the newly announced job losses at Xbox.
They write: "Activision, the Call of Duty studio, will make the next Halo game, which THR is told will be a full-feature, mainline instalment into the franchise."
Just to reiterate, today's news confirmed that Activision has been placed in charge of Halo, effectively removing Halo Studios as the property's driving force. The Campaign Evolved developer will now consist of a "small team" that'll seemingly play the role of a support studio.
This is after Campaign Evolved's team was hit with layoffs, following the remake's launch back in July.
The question, then, is whether another remake will be put together alongside this new Halo game. We'll have to wait and see how things pan out, but as it stands, it does seem as though Halo is being taken in a different direction yet again.
And of course, there's no guarantee that this new Halo will even release on PlayStation. Xbox clearly wants to restore hardcore faith in the brand by keeping key titles exclusive, like next month's Gears of War: E-Day.
