Magic: The Gathering has been offering some explosively popular releases with its recent Secret Lair drops, with the latest print-to-order Hatsune Miku deck being a massive departure from Wizards of the Coast's traditional sales strategy. Despite the decision being praised for making the new release more accessible than ever, MTG's most recent Secret Lair drops haven't been without their share of controversy.
From long back-order windows, frustrating buying processes, or concerns over the randomized sale practices incorporated into the newest Zeta Secret Lair drop, the director of Secret Lair himself, Matthew Hodgins, directly responded to several concerns on the Wizards website whilst officially announcing the next Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds & Ends.
In the public statement, Hodgins goes on to say that the 24-order window for the previous Hatsune Miku Commander Deck "went incredibly well," and that it made WOTC start "rethinking how we approach our more playable-out-of-the-box releases." As a result of its success, the previously leaked Odds & Ends Commander Deck will similarly be released with a 24-hour limited order window, with backorders after the initial print runs out.
WOTC says they will "check back in on the topic" of their dedicated deck storefront and stocking demands after the Odds and Ends sale ends.
Although a backorder is certainly easier to swallow than not getting to purchase a deck at all, Hodgins acknowledged that there is still "room for improvement" with the release, citing that they are "working to improve" backorder fulfillment alongside their current shipping and carrier changes that recently rolled out across the Secret Lair store.
Another promising note is that despite plenty of player concerns over the booster pack format of the upcoming Zeta Secret Lair drop, WOTC has said that "there are no plans on our current roadmap to do anything like that" again in the future, offering no intentions of it becoming a standard practice for the storefront moving forward as opposed to simply being a fun one-off release.
While it's great to hear that fans won't need to be worried about the "slippery slopes" of boosters becoming commonplace in Secret Lair store after the popular Zeta drop, fans have already been responding to Reddit user RBGolbat who initially shared the news by saying that they're still "disappointed with their shipping response."
Even though some MTG fans have only had good experiences with the updated carriers so far, others have noted poor communication, damage or loss during delivery, or even being shipped the wrong deck entirely, which is how the Odds and Ends Commander Deck was originally leaked in the first place.
