In a world currently brimming with stellar Metroidvanias to choose from and enjoy, Castlevania is obviously still one of the most important. I mean, duh. The "vania" in "Metroidvania" obviously comes from something. That said, it's also a genre in recent years that's seemed mostly fine to pass the torch along to the new age of creators.
Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Nine Sols, Blasphemous, Ori, MIO: Memories In Orbit, and dozens more have accepted the duty in the last decade to keep the genre alive and well. And while Castlevania and Metroid certainly haven't been dormant, they also are simply objectively sharing more bandwidth than ever with these newcomers to the scene that have really helped vault the modern Metroidvania to the top of many players' gaming preferences.
Soon, however, one of the stalwarts of the genre is returning with a traditional, side-scrolling title that seems primed to take back some of the spotlight that's been fragmented off in the modern era. I got to go hands-on with Castlevania: Belmont's Curse at gamescom 2026, and it definitely seems like it's shaping up to be a new classic, rivaling anything else we've gotten in the genre in recent memory.
A franchise that's spanned many a console generation at this point, we've seen the Castlevania IP take many different shapes and forms over the years. Belmont's Curse, though decidedly different looking than many other titles in the franchise, still has the tone you've come to expect from a Castlevania game.
We start in Paris, 1499, to find the city lit ablaze with all types of heinous creatures now running amok in the streets and gatekeeping us from map progression. How incredibly rude. All of this is illustrated with a brand of 2.5D art that immediately stands out as particularly beautiful and unique compared to many others that have taken on this dimension.
The colors are vibrant and striking, giving each area of the game a distinct vibe, and also an extremely stylish-looking design scheme. Colors specifically are leveraged and saturated to the point of extremity, and it works very well. If you're in a room that's yellow, it is yellow, while still gorgeously detailed in its background and total artwork package to make every single screen in the game a standout.
Trevor, Rose, and even the bosses in the game are fully voice acted, and I think the performances so far are striking the perfect balance between fun and campy, while also adding to the seriousness of the task at hand to save Paris from whatever evil forces have currently placed it under attack.
