Krafton has officially canceled PUBG: Black Budget, ending development on the extraction shooter before it could reach a full release. The project was intended to expand the PUBG universe beyond its battle royale roots with a first-person PvPvE experience built around repeated expeditions into a mysterious island.
Krafton's Black Budget had been part of the company's plans for several years before players were finally given the opportunity to try it last year. The publisher previously discussed the project in investor materials as part of its strategy to expand the PUBG IP into new genres, eventually unveiling it as a tactical extraction shooter and opening the door to outside testing. Its first major Closed Alpha took place in December 2025, followed by another test from June 26 to June 29, 2026. At the time of the second test, PUBG Studios was still describing player activity and feedback as valuable to refining the game on its "road to launch," making the cancellation only a few months later a sharp reversal
PUBG Studios announced that development of PUBG: Black Budget has officially ended after reviewing the project's current state and future direction. According to the developer, it concluded that the game's existing direction would not allow the team to deliver an experience players could "enjoy over the long term," leading to the decision to cancel the project before release. The studio thanked the players who participated in the recent Closed Alpha tests and provided feedback, adding that lessons learned through development and testing will be carried into future projects as PUBG Studios continues exploring other ventures in the PUBG universe. At this time, Krafton has not identified any particular issues, financial considerations, or pieces of player feedback as the reason for the cancellation.

The PUBG: Black Budget extraction shooter project would have taken the gunplay associated with PUBG into a very different setting. Players were set to become Contractors exploring Coli Island, where a classified research facility had become caught inside a time loop caused by a supernatural phenomenon known as the Anomaly. Up to 45 players could enter in squads of three, competing against rival teams while also dealing with AI-controlled threats and searching for valuable technology before attempting to extract. Successful runs would allow players to retain their loot and use it to improve their character, craft equipment, conduct research, and expand a personal Base, while dying meant losing whatever had been carried into the expedition. The island itself was planned as a 2.5-by-2.5-kilometer open world, with individual runs lasting up to roughly 30 minutes.

However, there had already been indications that PUBG Studios was encountering some issues with the game after opening it up to player testing. Following the December 2025 Closed Alpha, the developer said interest and participation had exceeded expectations and highlighted promising feedback surrounding the game's atmosphere, visuals, and overall systems. At the same time, testers repeatedly raised concerns about combat perception, situational clarity, and fatigue across repeated runs, while reports of unauthorized program alerts popping up on PCs prompted additional attention toward anti-cheat measures. Development nevertheless continued through another Closed Alpha in June, and PUBG Studios has not connected any one of those earlier concerns directly to the eventual cancellation.
