Bardock Returns in New Dragon Ball Super Release

Bardock has always been one of the most popular characters in Dragon Ball despite how infrequently he appears. In the original manga, he only shows up in two very small panels, while his anime appearances are relegated exclusively to filler and the odd flashback. For years, Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku was the only way for fans to experience the tragic story of Planet Vegeta's downfall. All that has changed with Dragon Ball Super, however.

Ever since Dragon Ball Super: Broly made Bardock the protagonist of the movie's prologue, the series has made an effort to keep bringing him back for new sagas. Bardock is set to play a huge role in Dragon Ball Super 2, but in the meantime, his variant from the Dragon Ball Z timeline is making a long-awaited comeback in Fusion World.

The October 2026 edition of Saikyo Jump will include a new bonus card for the Dragon Ball Super Card Game Fusion World trading card game based directly on Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku. This is paired with Future Gohan's release in the 2026 November edition of V-Jump. Saikyo Jump readers will receive a Blue-Type Bardock card depicting Goku's father mere moments before he fails to unite the Saiyans in rebellion against Frieza.

Like Future Gohan, the Bardock card comes with a Power Level of 10,000 (which, funnily enough, is actually Bardock's canon Battle Power unlike Future Gohan). Bardock can give other cards when played and can even be transformed into a Great Ape if the proper conditions are met (and you have an Oozaru Bardock card). Fusion World's Bardock card will be exclusive to physical copies of Saikyo Jump and will not be available digitally.

Bardock won't appear in Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, but he'll be getting his own mini-arc in Dragon Ball Super 2's second story arc. The Granolah the Survivor Saga examines the consequences the Saiyans' violence had on the universe. The manga uses the genocide of the Cerealian race as the story's backdrop. The only reason the entire species isn't wiped out is because Bardock decides to save Granolah's life in the spur of the moment.

Bardock actually gets some solid character development in the Granolah Saga. He's still fundamentally a murderous Saiyan soldier, but Goku's birth awakens a nurturing instinct (which also contextualizes why Bardock risks his life to send his son off-world in Dragon Ball Super: Broly). He puts his life on the line for Granolah, fighting a villain who is multiple leagues stronger than him. When Gas gets the upper hand, Bardock even taps into his own version of Ultra Instinct.

Dragon Ball Super 2 shows what exactly Goku inherited from his father, gives him a huge power boost, and even has a sweet moment where Goku actually learns about Bardock. As fan servicey as it is, it's surprisingly powerful to see Goku finally learn where he comes from. It lands especially well since Dragon Ball Super 2 picks up the thread from Dragon Ball Super: Broly of Goku calling himself Kakarot and finding more pride in his Saiyan heritage.
