DenuvOwO, one of the biggest cracking groups targeting Denuvo’s anti-piracy software, has reportedly disbanded after a lawsuit from Denuvo GmbH was filed against another popular cracking group. What does this entail for the future of piracy and the industry in general?
DenuvOwO, the group associated with the hypervisor-based bypass, is no more. Though there’s no official confirmation, a source trusted by Tom’s Hardware stated this resulted from a lawsuit by Denuvo, even if it wasn’t aimed at DenuvOwO but at Voices38, another Denuvo cracking group.
The lawsuit also appears to have had a wider chilling effect. CS.Rin has removed links to games bypassed using DenuvOwO’s method and banned some members associated with the group. Denuvo’s lawsuit identifies Discord, Reddit, and Steam accounts it believes are connected to Voices38, potentially allowing the company to seek information that could reveal the cracker’s identity.
If you’re among the gamers who dislike Denuvo, don’t fret too much. While the community sees this as a loss in the war against Denuvo, it might amount to no more than a bit of stalling. DenuvOwO resorted to open-source software, meaning that anyone dedicated and skilled enough can build upon the group’s efforts.
Groups like Rune and Voices38 are still active, despite the lawsuit. The latter recently stated that “all is fine[…] Everything will continue as normal.” This seems to ring true, as even just a few days ago we’ve seen releases from either group.
Denuvo is an incredibly effective anti-piracy software—but at great cost. Piracy can harm the gaming industry, and most of us would welcome a sound solution. But because this software can reduce the performance of the games it’s protecting, many gamers object to it.
Putting more complex explanations aside, RUNE recently released a proof of concept build that fully removes both Denuvo Anti-Tamper and VMProtect from Assassin’s Creed Mirage. A benchmark of the resulting build found that it averaged nearly 15% higher FPS and had 76% higher minimum FPS than the Denuvo-protected version on the test system.
