Preorders for the limited-edition Grand Theft Auto 6 DualSense controllers have already sold out at several major retailers, less than a day after they officially went live in the United States. The early rush for the GTA 6 accessories has also led to lengthy PlayStation Direct queues and heavily marked-up resale listings, though availability remains highly fluid.
Sony and Rockstar first revealed the GTA 6 DualSense White Limited Edition and Black Limited Edition controllers during the September 3 State of Play showcase. Both gamepads carry an $84.99 MSRP and are set to launch on November 19 alongside the much-anticipated game itself. Sony said from the outset that both limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense models would be available only in limited quantities, though it did not specify exactly how limited supplies would be. The Black Limited Edition comes with an additional restriction: it is exclusive to PlayStation Direct and therefore available only in regions where Sony officially operates the storefront, including the U.S.
U.S. preorders for the new GTA 6 merch opened at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET on September 10 and immediately put the PlayStation Direct store under heavy load, with customers encountering long virtual queues and sign-in problems. The White Limited Edition also started disappearing from individual stores throughout the day, with Best Buy and GameStop among those to sell out or pause orders. Still, the situation has not yet turned into a market-wide shortage, as some retailers have since restocked.
At least some of the early sellouts did not necessarily mean retailers had exhausted their stock entirely. Target, for example, briefly listed the White Limited Edition as unavailable before putting it back on sale as of 12 p.m. ET on September 11. That fluctuation suggests at least some retailers are releasing preorder stock in waves. With nearly two months to go before launch, additional preorder batches or cancellations could continue to shift the availability picture.
Resellers moved quickly to capitalize on the uneven availability of the GTA 6 controllers. eBay listings for confirmed or purported preorders are commonly asking $150 to $180, compared with the $84.99 MSRP. Some offers are therefore priced at roughly twice the retail value before shipping and taxes. As with previous cases of scalpers targeting PlayStation hardware, those are merely asking prices and could still crater if Sony continues replenishing supply while demand remains strong.
PlayStation Direct has restricted GTA 6 PS5 controller preorders to one per customer, which is a standard anti-scalping measure. Some US retailers, meanwhile, are still allowing multiple purchases, though that could change as their initial allocations run low.
