Resident Evil Movie's Zach Cregger "Doesn't Care" About Ending Criticism

Resident Evil Movie's Zach Cregger "Doesn't Care" About Ending Criticism

The Resident Evil movie has been taking the internet by storm since it was released last week, with plenty of debate surrounding its quality as an adaptation of the series and as a film. While the reception to the movie has been astounding with a near-perfect review score, one thing that many moviegoers can't seem to agree on is the ending of the film itself.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the ending of the Resident Evil movie.

Despite some reviewers having complained that the ending was horrible and took away from the otherwise excellent moviegoing experience, as noted by Gamespot, Resident Evil's director Zach Cregger recently put out several official responses to the criticism, and even outlined the original plan for Resident Evil's finale sequence.

While the movie builds up to the fact that Resident Evil's new protagonist is slowly being taken over by an unstoppable virus, the entire ending sequence still has viewers on the edge of their seats waiting to see if any of the frightened scientists would actually be able to inject him with the cure or not.

As noted by Zach Cregger himself in the interview with Collider on YouTube, the original ending to the film saw the syringe breaking the first time Bryan attacked one of the scientists, which the director states had early testers being frustrated that it meant the movie was "over" and just became a senseless killing spree.

As it turns out, however, Cregger filmed a contingency version of the final scientist about to stab Bryan with the cure that we ended up seeing in the final cut of the movie, which the director said "keeps the stakes all the way until the end," and changes the ending from simply "Kill them, I guess?" into fans begging the scientists to "save him."

Unlike his dismissal of the more hopeless ending that would have ended in a pointless killing spree, Zach Cregger is perfectly content with the ending of Bryan reaching his "final form" as one of the mutated bosses you could expect to find in a Resident Evil game, which he says was always the intent behind the movie's ending.

In another interview with the Flesh Horror Movie Podcast, Cregger stated that the Resident Evil movie was never meant to be about a "guy who saves the world," but instead "the original story of a monster."
