Microsoft has today announced its plans to introduce a disc-to-digital program on Xbox consoles that will allow console owners to turn their physical discs into a digital version.
This follows in the wake of news Sony plans to end PlayStation disc manufacturing for all games released after January 2028 — a decision it has no interest in backing down from, as per Sony executives.
In an Xbox Wire article, it's revealed Xbox console players will be able to insert an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S disc into their system and gain a license to play the digital version of that game. Having claimed the entitlement, the digital version will operate like any other digital edition and have access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming features.
It's said that "most" Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S titles support the disc-to-digital transfer already, and Xbox insiders can begin testing the program from Monday, 31st August 2026. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not supported.
Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S disc will offer a single revocable digital license. That means that once a disc is inserted into a console, the digital license applies to that system. The disc still remains playable after the transfer, but if someone else goes to claim the digital license, the original person will have the license taken off them.
"We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time," Microsoft added. "While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."
