In under 10 years, we have had the revivals of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, a boom in indie horror, and dozens of other terrifying experiences that have brought millions of screams and plenty of sleepless nights.
First-person horror games are easily the scariest games in the genre, as the immersion factor elevates to maximum levels, and you are brought closer to the dangers than ever before. As it turns out, the world has been gifted with some truly exceptional first-person horrors since 2020, each with its own distinct sense of fear and each more horrifying than the last.

The Exit 8 demonstrates how little a horror game actually needs to create tension. You find yourself trapped inside an endless underground subway station and must carefully observe the environment to determine whether anything has changed in order to escape. While that objective sounds incredibly simple, the game's repetition turns familiar surroundings into a source of constant suspicion.
Rather than relying on elaborate combat or grotesque monsters, the game effortlessly weaponizes your own uncertainty, making you second-guess every decision and thought that pops into your mind. It's paranoia at its best, and I think it is the best example of how to execute liminal horror right.
There have been many attempts to disguise horror beind a cutsey exterior, with games like Doki Doki Literature Club being the most well-known examples. MiSide is the next evolution of that psychological nightmare. Mita is your lovable companion, and you spend a lot of time together eating food and watching TV, but those cozy activities quickly diverge into something far more sinister.
Part of what makes MiSide so terrifying is how you never know what's coming next. A random monster might appear, or Mita will say something completely outlandish, then go back to normal, giving it a uniquely disturbing feel that sets it apart from virtually every other game in the genre.
