Bungie today confirmed that they're not only sticking with Destiny, but that all previously vaulted Destiny 2 content will return.
It's been a rough year for Bungie. Following the success of the Destiny 2: The Final Shape, the developer has dealt with a string of heavy blows. Major layoffs, Marathon's poor Alpha reception, lackluster engagement with the next two Destiny 2 expansions, the ending of Destiny 2 development, and the dwindling Marathon playerbase have all happened in just the past 12 months. Fans have long been dreading what would become of Bungie, speculating numerous scenarios. Thankfully, Bungie have broken the silence.
In a new blog and video update, Bungie's Poria Torkan, Bungie's Studio Head, and Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon, laid out the next chapter for the studio. For the studio, it begins with earning back player trust. For Destiny and Marathon, it means buckling down and doing right by both franchises.
Both Torkan and Deane made it clear that Destiny is foundational to Bungie's future. The studio is not done with Destiny as there are more stories they want to tell and worlds to explore. To be clear, they did not announce Destiny 3, but they are asking for patience as they explore what's next.
One of their chief goals with Destiny is to return it to the franchise's initial promises of awe-inspiring mystery, discovery, and community. To kickstart that goal, they revealed that they'll restore the content Bungie controversially removed and "vaulted" back in 2020. All Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids will be returned to the game, creating a truly definitive Destiny 2 experience.
To set expectations, the vaulted content won't all drop in a single day. As pointed out, changes made to the game since 2020 require the team to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other systems. It might take some time, though Bungie did promise to provide more details about the process in the coming months.
Bungie is not abandoning Marathon. It was never intend to replace Destiny as many like to speculate, but serves as its own standalone experience. Moving forward, Bungie aims to anchor the experience around what makes it special while evolving it beyond the genre constraints placed on it at launch.
The rest of the game's first year will focus on strengthening combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more options with how they play the game. PvPvE remains, but new options will emerge in the coming months. These include both co-op PvE and competitive PvP. A deeper breakdown about the future of Marathon comes out later this week.
