Masterpiece Open-World RPGs That Have Aged Like Fine Wine

Masterpiece Open-World RPGs That Have Aged Like Fine Wine

Video games as an art form are known for aging in vastly different ways. As technology evolves and expectations rise, it is hard for even exceptional games to stand the test of time. That sentiment is perhaps the most relevant with open-world RPGs, where the cracks become much harder to hide as the years go by.

However, in some cases, greatness at launch is able to transcend time and continue to amaze and impress players months, years, and even decades later. These open-world RPGs represent the peak of their genre at the time of their launch, and they are still able to compete with, and often overtake, the best of the genre today.

Gothic 2 is perhaps the clearest example of why open-world design does not require enormous maps. Its world is comparatively small relative to many other similar games, but almost every area has a purpose, and you quickly realize that the NPCs function more like actual individuals, with routines, professions, and relationships, which gives you the impression of an actual functioning society rather than a location full of random quest dispensers.

That design philosophy has aged exceptionally well because modern RPGs have moved away from that level of immersion and towards a more accessible style of gameplay. Here, though, everything is uncompromising, forcing you to earn your place in the world and become stronger over time. While there are some clunkier elements, the core concepts have continued to stay relevant for over 20 years.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is one of those games whose technical problems have become almost irrelevant compared with the strength of its ideas. The environments are filled to the brim with engaging characters and insanely diverse quests that respond to you differently depending on what kind of clan you have chosen to follow.

Those responses become far more complex as time goes on. Opposing vampire clans can approach situations in radically different ways, while dialogue choices and supernatural abilities open up alternative solutions that feed into the role-playing freedom the genre is so well-known for. I should also praise the writing and atmosphere, where the dark and gloomy city is genuinely distinct compared to a lot of other RPGs. Now that the wave of issues has passed, we have a timeless classic that may very well last forever.
