Open-World RPGs That Were Perfect From Day One

Open-World RPGs That Were Perfect From Day One

Nowadays, so many massive AAA games launch with missing or broken pieces that aren't fixed until after release, if at all. Considering their sheer size, open-world RPGs rarely arrive in top shape, and many folks nowadays prefer to wait a few months (or years) before picking up these games. By then, they should be in peak form... and finally match what a handful of titles achieved on Day One.

Even all-time great open-world RPGs like The Witcher 3 had less-than-smooth debuts, even if the positives largely outweighed the negatives. Frankly, nobody should have to wait weeks or months to play the "best" version of a game they bought, let alone a functioning one. Perfect open-world RPGs are very rare, and ones that launched like that are almost non-existent. These games accomplished the impossible.

"Perfect" is a bit hyperbolic, but these open-world RPGs were in tip-top shape from the start, and Day One players didn't have to live through any growing pains. They may have improved after launch, but they started from a very strong position.

I'm letting some technical issues slide, as open-world RPGs have so many moving parts that something will almost certainly break. These games delivered on their promises on Day One.

Also, no action-adventure games like Breath of the Wild or Ghost of Tsushima.

Elden Ring didn't launch with a roadmap, microtransactions, or promises of upcoming patches; no, it simply arrived, fully formed and ready to play.

By early 2022, the open-world genre was reaching its lowest point, as it had devolved into exhausting checklists and time-wasters. When FromSoftware revealed plans to transplant the Souls formula into an open world, reception was initially mixed, as some folks feared the developer's trademark tight level design would not survive.

Well, those fears disappeared the second somebody booted Elden Ring and stepped out of the Stranded Graveyard into Limgrave, only to immediately meet their end at the hands of the Tree Sentinel. Brutal in difficulty and tone, the Lands Between instantly became the gaming world's new home, and Day One players found themselves collectively exploring a hellscape packed with secrets, horrors, bosses, weapons, and fashion.
