Millennials grew up with some of the most iconic games ever made. As a millennial myself, I grew up with fond memories of Pokémon, which dominated my life in several ways thanks to the games, cards, collectibles, and Pokémon anime. As time went on, though, Pokémon didn't develop in quite the ways it could have, and though it remains a classic, many millennials have wanted to see the series advance.
Aniimo just released, and it's the game that so many of us have been waiting for. It has so many details that work together to bring the game to life in a meaningful way. While nothing will replace Pokémon, getting a game that realizes what we've been requesting for years is incredible. Here are some ways Aniimo is that game.
Pokémon is and always will be the original and classic creature collecting game. But it's not radical to say that the series has been stagnant for some time now. Landing on a formula that works can be a blessing and a curse, as it can encourage complacency in developers with an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude.
And so Aniimo has swept in with the graphical, combat, and lifestyle changes that millennials have been requesting for years. It doesn't have the same beloved starter Pokémon or familiar regions, but it's realized the version of Pokémon that many of us have wanted.
Palworld did a lot to change the creature collector game with a lot of new features, but there was too much emphasis on survival and its shooter mechanics for it to truly feel like the warm, mostly stress-free creature collector. Aniimo has pushed the genre forward in a lot of ways, including some innovations in customization and key gameplay areas.
This is also why competition is a good thing. If Aniimo sets a new standard for creature collecting games, even Pokémon will have to adapt and improve itself if it doesn't want to be left behind. It seems unthinkable that this could happen, but it's very possible, especially if nostalgia isn't strong enough to hold onto the market.
Pokémon is by far the biggest game in the genre, and it's by no means a bad game at all. However, Aniimo is an improvement in many ways, with quality of life features that many of us will find it difficult to live without going forward.
