Marvel Snap’s popular and long-awaited Draft mode will go offline next week, but the wait for a new iteration won’t be long.
Thanks to Second Dinner, I can exclusively reveal that Draft will return just three weeks after the current run ends, on Sept. 28. Along with assumed tweaks to the existing formula, this iteration will also have its own unique wrinkle: it will use a scoring system similar to Sanctum Showdown.
In Sanctum Showdown, players must compete for one of three locations on each turn. On turns one and two, a location will be worth one point each. On turn three and beyond, one location will be worth at least four, while the other will remain one apiece. Snapping will increase the score for each turn’s main location, with a max of six points available if both players snap. The first player to 16 points wins.
This is certainly going to be a departure from the initial run of Draft, as Sanctum scoring really changes how decks are chosen and how the game is played. Certain cards are much stronger, such as Guardians of the Galaxy cards that gain power when the opponent plays at the same location on that turn. It feels like this will end up being a very different-feeling version of Draft than the one we’ve been playing so far.
The first few days of Draft mode this week were full of casual, silly fun, but a meta quickly took shape. Boost decks, in particular, stand tall far above the rest as the easiest one to build alongside the inherent RNG of the mode. I’ll be very curious to see how much Second Dinner balances Draft and its starter decks moving forward.
One new change that I can confirm, though, is that Draft will now use every player’s favorite (starred) variant, so no more default splits on cards appearing in the mode if you so wish. The cards you’ve spent time (and money) on crafting will now be on display, and that’s a great change.
I do think that Draft is the best thing to happen to Snap in quite a while, and an influx of new and returning players, as Steam charts prove, but it’s far from perfect, and I do have faith that the mode will improve over time.
For now, players can look forward to a new Snap season kicking off tomorrow ahead of Draft’s return towards the end of the month.
