Open-world RPGs are one of the most popular genres of games, and include some of the most acclaimed games ever made. Think games The Witcher 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Skyrim. While the most popular RPGs tend to be more action-focused, there's a lot of range in the genre, and some popular titles are downright cozy.
Aniimo is an MMORPG with a gorgeous open world and some clever takes on an old formula. It succeeds as both an RPG and an open-world game thanks to its carefully crafted gameplay loop and systems that offer a ton of variety and options for crafting your character and customizing the aniimos you can collect. Here are some of the ways it succeeds as an RPG.
Creating a successful open-world can be tricky, as there's a careful balance to achieve between packing in too many meaningless fetch quests and a beautiful but empty world with nothing to do and no reason to explore. Aniimo gets this balance right, with each region offering new things to find, but not so much to do that it gets overwhelming.
You can also access most areas right from the get-go, but they're also soft-locked by level. Wandering into an area that outranks you doesn't necessarily result in insta-death, but being attacked by hostile aniimo likely won't end well. A better strategy that Aniimo funnels you into is to explore a region completely before moving on.
There are base aniimo forms that serve as their default appearance, and then there are cosmetic variations beyond rank or Sparkling types. Different regions have different variations, and an aniimo like Iris or Emberpup will look different depending on where you find them, or even if you're exploring at day or night.
Aside from adding more variety, this encourages you to leave your comfort zone and explore different regions, especially if you want to complete your collection. More than exploring, it encourages thoroughly exploring each region rather than just doing what you need to do and leaving, something I've been guilty of in the past.
Beautiful scenery is perhaps something that's easy to take for granted because there are a lot of beautiful games, but it's a really important part of creating a game's atmosphere. Aniimo's open-world succeeds here, with beautiful colors, a lovely art style, and varied scenery and environments that feel truly beautiful.
